An extensive drilling study was made of the proposed gravity sewer route through Hellertown park lands during the summer of 2010.
An engineering evaluation of the results of that study indicated that the proposed route was impractical for construction of a deep (gravity based) sanitary sewer interceptor.
The underlying substrata was largely alluvial (sand/gravel) in nature over a large portion of the proposed route and was too water-permeable to allow for economical construction. In some areas, the underlying bedrock would have presented additional problems.
This analysis is consistent with and further reinforces the most recent studies of the Hellertown Marsh substrata by independent researchers.
The Authority is now reviewing alternative routing which will involve addition/upgrade of at least one pump station.
